Monday

29 June 2026

Good morning! It is the last Monday of June, which means the monsoon has now properly parked itself over half the country, and roughly forty percent of India's gym resolutions for 2026 have quietly expired. We see you, treadmill gathering dust in the corner.

That is the kind of low-stakes honesty a Monday deserves. Today's newsletter, on the other hand, is anything but low-stakes.

In today's newsletter: Ireland's stunning T20I series sweep over India, Pakistan's deadly strikes along the Afghan border, and Modi's historic address to Seychelles' Parliament.

THE WEEK AHEAD

What's Happening This Week

Wimbledon begins. The grass-court Grand Slam gets underway today at the All England Club, running through July 12.

India regroups in England. After the Ireland heartbreak, India's white-ball squad opens its five-match T20I series at Chester-le-Street on July 1.

World Cup knockouts arrive. The Round of 16 begins July 4, with matches in Houston and Philadelphia kicking off the tournament's business end.

A digital health upgrade lands. Health Minister JP Nadda is set to launch Aarogya Setu 2.0 and the National Health Claims Exchange at Vigyan Bhawan today, turning the old pandemic contact-tracing app into a full personal health record platform.

MAIN STORY

Ireland Hands India Its First-Ever T20I Series Defeat

On Sunday, Ireland completed a stunning 2-0 series sweep over India, beating the T20 World Cup champions by a solitary run in Belfast to register the first bilateral T20I series win of its history over India. Defending 154/8, debutant pacer Jai Moondra picked up 3/32, including the wickets of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, while Tilak Varma's defiant 55 fell agonisingly short as India finished on 153/9.

The defeat snapped a run of 16 consecutive bilateral T20I series wins for India stretching back to 2023, a streak that survived tours of Australia, England and South Africa. For Ireland, the sweep is being called one of the greatest weekends in the country's cricketing history, with Moondra, a Rajasthan-born pacer who moved to Dublin as a teenager, named Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

The Bigger Picture

India fielded a side missing several first-choice T20 names, but losing to Ireland, a team ranked outside the world's top ten in the format, is still a first for the reigning T20 World Cup holders. With a five-match T20I tour of England starting July 1, selectors now have an uncomfortable headline to manage heading into a tournament-heavy second half of the year.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

Jai Moondra grew up bowling on matting wickets in Jaipur before his family moved to Ireland when he was a teenager. On Sunday, the Rajasthan-born pacer dismissed Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, the very players he grew up idolising on Indian television, to help seal a series win that Irish cricket will remember for a long time.

Pakistan Kills 29 Militants in Strikes Along Afghan Border

Pakistani security forces carried out a ground operation and follow-up strikes along the Afghan border on Sunday, killing 29 fighters in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Among the dead was a senior commander identified as Khan Farosh, described by the military as a high-value target tied to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan network.

The operation came a day after militants stormed a paramilitary Rangers headquarters in Karachi, killing three soldiers in an attack claimed by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter faction of the Pakistani Taliban. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul's Taliban government of sheltering fighters who launch cross-border attacks, a charge Kabul denies, keeping tensions between the two neighbours elevated heading into the new week.

Modi Becomes First Indian PM to Address Seychelles' Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to address the Seychelles National Assembly, invoking the 250-year-old voyage of the ship Thelemaque to trace the islands' historic ties with India. The speech marked his 20th address to a foreign parliament, delivered while serving as Guest of Honour for Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations.

At a joint press meet with President Wavel Ramkalawan, Modi unveiled a $175 million Special Economic Package for Seychelles, split between a $125 million rupee-denominated line of credit and a $50 million grant for projects spanning maritime security, social housing, transport and skill development. The visit followed the previous day's handover of a Made-in-India patrol vessel and a fleet of ambulances and utility vehicles to the island nation, part of New Delhi's push to deepen its footprint in the western Indian Ocean.

THE WORLD

Pangaea Revisited

Ceasefire's first casualty. An Israeli platoon commander was killed in a clash with a Hezbollah gunman in south Lebanon overnight Sunday, the first Israeli fatality since the trilateral Israel-Lebanon-US agreement was signed days earlier.

A wildfire's deadly toll. Three firefighters were killed and two injured in a burnover incident while responding to the Knowles and Gore fires on the Colorado-Utah border, even as the separate, larger Cottonwood Fire keeps burning nearby.

Venezuela's grim count climbs. The earthquake death toll in Venezuela neared 1,500 as the rescue window closes, five days after twin quakes flattened parts of Caracas and La Guaira.

Europe's heatwave turns deadly. The World Health Organization says the continent's record heatwave is now linked to more than 1,300 excess deaths, with France alone recording around 1,000.

THE REST

Canada's late drama. A stoppage-time strike from Stephen Eustaquio gave Canada a 1-0 win over South Africa, sending the co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time ever.
