Wednesday

12 August 2026

Good morning. It has been a quieter news morning by the usual standards, the kind of day where the story that matters most is not the loudest one but the one with real consequences underneath it. Markets are still finding their footing after a choppy week, and the mood in global capitals remains tense rather than settled.

In today's newsletter: a food-safety scare at India's biggest quick-commerce player, Colombia's earthquake death toll climbing past 200, and Washington's pivot to economic pressure on Iran.

MAIN STORY

Blinkit's Mumbai dark store loses its food license over a cockroach infestation

Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration suspended the food licence of a Blinkit dark store in Mumbai's Malad West with immediate effect, after an inspection uncovered cockroaches in the fruit and vegetable storage area, expired and damaged packaged food, and rusted, poorly maintained cold storage.

The facility has been barred from selling or distributing food products until further orders, with inspectors also flagging weak employee hygiene and insufficient protective equipment for staff handling food.

The Bigger Picture

India's ten-minute delivery boom has expanded warehouse networks at a pace regulators are still catching up with. A single suspension will not slow the industry down, but it puts every quick-commerce operator on notice that dark stores are being inspected like any other food business, not treated as a back-office technicality.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

The inspection also flagged poor waste management and incomplete medical records for food handlers, violations that rarely make headlines but are exactly what separates a routine audit from a genuine health hazard.

Colombia's earthquake death toll climbs past 200 as rescuers reach remote towns

The death toll from Monday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake in western Colombia has climbed past 200, with rescuers still struggling to reach the epicentre near San Jose del Palmar in the mountainous Choco region.

Colombia's Geological Service has called it the country's strongest earthquake this century, and President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national state of emergency, with tremors and damage reported as far as Cali, Pereira and Quibdo.

Trump pivots to economic pressure on Iran as the Hormuz standoff drags on

With strikes and direct talks both stalled, President Trump has pivoted back to sanctions as his strategy to end the standoff with Iran, betting that renewed financial pressure can force Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump has also said he will demand reparations from Iran as a condition for reopening the waterway, while Tehran continues to insist it will not reopen the strait until Washington changes course, a deadlock that is what pushed oil, and Indian markets, on Tuesday.
