Tuesday

18 August 2026

Good morning. It is Tuesday, and global commodity markets are keeping currencies and investors on edge this week, with the knock-on effects showing up quickly on Dalal Street. There was also a fair bit of movement overnight in disaster response and on the sporting field.

In today's newsletter: a US-Iran deadline lapses and sends oil higher, a fire at a West Bengal pilgrim town hotel turns deadly, and Assam tallies the cost of this year's floods.

MAIN STORY

US-Iran deadline to end the war lapses, oil surge pressures the rupee

The 60-day window for Washington and Tehran to sign a lasting agreement on the Strait of Hormuz expired on Monday with no deal in sight. President Trump said Iran should "put up the white flag of surrender" while threatening to bomb Oman if it interferes in the talks it has been brokering.

Tehran, for its part, has signalled it could shift from a defensive posture to a "fully offensive" one in the strait if diplomacy fails, keeping the world's most important oil chokepoint under a cloud months after the fighting first broke out in February.

The uncertainty is already showing up at home. The rupee slipped to 95.61 against the dollar as importer dollar demand picked up, while Brent crude's climb toward $89 a barrel dragged the Sensex and Nifty into the red on Monday.

The Bigger Picture

This war has now outlasted its own diplomatic deadline. Every extra week of disruption at Hormuz, through which a large share of India's crude imports pass, feeds straight into pump prices, the country's import bill and, ultimately, the rupee.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

The RBI quietly shut its FCNR(B) forex swap window a month early after strong dollar inflows. Closing a facility built to attract dollars, right as oil pushes the rupee lower, suggests the central bank is bracing for more currency pressure rather than reacting to a one-off shock.

DEEP DIVE

Fire at Tarapith pilgrim hotel kills seven, injures dozens

A fire tore through a four-storey hotel in the temple town of Tarapith in West Bengal's Birbhum district, killing at least seven people and leaving several others critically injured. The blaze broke out on the ground floor around 5 am, while most guests were still asleep.

Many of the guests were pilgrims who had travelled to the Tarapith temple to mark the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan. Hotel officials blamed a short circuit for the blaze; the injured were rushed to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

DEEP DIVE

Assam puts this year's flood damage at ₹480 crore

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this year's monsoon floods caused an estimated ₹480 crore in damage, with 26,681 houses affected across the state.

The figure is the state government's first formal tally of this season's losses and will likely feed into its case for central disaster relief funds, even as several rivers in the region remain close to danger levels.

Broking shake-up. Groww extended its lead in discount broking in July even as NSE's overall active client base shrank for the month, a sign the market's retail base is consolidating around fewer platforms.

THE WORLD

Pangaea Revisited

China's growth wobble. Xi Jinping invoked predecessor Jiang Zemin's legacy to push his economic agenda as fresh data showed industrial output, consumption and investment all missing forecasts.

Downing Street mix-up. Newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham exchanged messages with someone posing as a senior White House aide, according to reports.
