15 September 2026

Good morning. Markets are back open today after yesterday's Ganesh Chaturthi holiday, and traders have two days of news to catch up on before they can react. The bigger undercurrent this week is what elevated fuel and food costs are doing to household budgets, even as the tech and diplomacy beats keep moving fast.

In today's newsletter: wholesale inflation's sharp climb, an AI construction startup's fresh funding, and China's high-stakes economic balancing act.

MAIN STORY

Wholesale inflation jumps to 9.92% in August, closing in on double digits

India's wholesale price inflation climbed to 9.92% in August, up from 9.78% in July, as fuel, power and food prices all moved higher together. It is the sharpest reading in nearly two years, and economists now expect the September print to push past the 10% mark.

Fuel and power inflation rose to 22.93% from 20.05% the month before, while food inflation hit a 20-month high of 7.1%, driven by fruits, vegetables, milk, spices and sugar. Manufactured products inflation also edged up, to 8.37% from 8.29%.

Economists are pinning the September forecast on the same driver behind the August number: the prolonged crisis in the Gulf and the resulting spike in crude prices, which has fed directly into transport and manufacturing costs across the economy.

The Bigger Picture

Wholesale prices feed into retail prices with a lag, so this number is a preview of what households will feel over the next few months at the till and the petrol pump. It also complicates the picture for anyone hoping the central bank has room to cut rates soon.

1 Thing Everyone Missed

Food inflation at a 20-month high lands weeks ahead of the festive season, when household consumption typically peaks. That timing squeezes budgets right when spending was expected to pick up.
